Alpaca walking in Dorset anyone? Walking with alpacas is a unique and interesting activity for the whole family to enjoy. The activity will include plenty of walking, and depending on the location, there will be uneven terrain and possibly some small hills to overcome.
Alpacas are interesting animals, known for their calm and inquisitive nature. They are the smallest member of the camel family with an average height of 91 centimetres. They are naturally inquisitive animals and very curious when being walked.
They are a great species known for protecting chickens and lambs, hence seeing them on plenty of farms.
Happyard

Happyard offers a variety of activities on the farm including meet an alpaca, and the chance to walk with them.
Open on Mondays, Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, the 90 minute sessions include an introduction to alpacas and their babies. You will also get the chance to interact with them, learning how to walk them before a stroll around the farmyard.
Alpaca Adventure

You’ll be given a lesson on how to interact with the alpacas at Alpaca Adventure in Staftesbury. Your walk will last around 30-40 mins, with the whole experience lasting for an hour and a half.
Groups of up to ten people can enjoy the alpaca walking, however booking is essential. You will also be able to see and enjoy the other animals on the small holding.
Dorset Alpaca Walking

Alpaca walks are available from mid April onwards at Dorset Alpaca Walking. You’ll begin your session by helping to round up the alpaca herd, before learning how to harness them and more about them.
The whole experience lasts for around two hours with the option to include some light refreshments after your walk in the beautiful countryside setting.
Longthorns Farm
Longthorns, Wareham BH20 6HH
Begin your session by learning about the herd of alpacas at Longthorns Farm. You’ll meet the male alpacas used for alpaca walking experiences, and walk through the woods with your guide.
The experience lasts for around an hour and 45 minutes followed by tea or coffee and biscuits and the end of your walk. A goody bag is also provided for every alpaca booked.
The farm is also home to glamping pods and shepherd huts for hire in Dorset.
Portland Alpacas

Shilvington Alpaca Walks

You’ll find Shilvington just outside of Weymouth near Portland. Here you can meet the cheeky alpacas and walk them around the stunning Dorset countryside. You may even be enjoying a great safari tent glamping holiday in Dorset at the same time. There’s even a pop up campsite available during the Summer months.
Led by your expert guide, there is plenty of chance to ask questions during your walk. If you are walking Fred, you’ll be in front as he likes to be the leader. Jerrico on the other hand is a very nosy alpaca. The minimum age for alpaca walking at Shilvington is 12 years old.
Llama Walking In Dorset
Whilst there aren’t any places to walk with Llamas in Dorset, there is the opportunity just across the Devon border in Sidmouth.
Peak Hill Llamas was set up in 2006, located on a 330 acre beef farm in East Devon near Sidmouth. Like Alpacas, Llamas are easy to handle and are great to walk. There are a variety of walking experiences available at Peak Hill Llamas, but it’s a popular activity and advisable to book well in advance.
